Appreciation:
Without doubt, this is a municipal zoo! So don't expect so much. It's free for kids.
A good number of species are on show, but I didn't feel any strong enthusiasms that they want to show animals in this way, or they want us to see them in that way. They might be thinking that , as a municipal zoo, those animals are enough for us (yes, for them). Also no 'eye-catchers'. I don't know this is good or not. One thing I was so sorry was that wire fences and cages were noticeable very much, although I understand this is an old zoo.
OK, this is a municipal zoo. A good place to drop in when you go around Okazaki area. Bringing lunch is a good idea. Here in Kyoto, if you visit to this zoo, you will see several art college students drawing animals quite earnestly.
The brochure is so bad, especially its latter half. It could be written only by a tipical government official. Declaration of the mayor of Kyoto? It is not a message for us, but for themselves. OK?
Again, without doubt, this is a municipal zoo! Don't expect so much. It's free for kids. <E.K> |
Official WELCOME from their brochure:
Located in the Okazaki area which spreads out at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains, Kyoto Municipal Zoo, the second oldest in Japan, opened in April of 1903.
Surrounded by points of interest such as Heian Jingu Shrine and Nanzen-ji Temple; cultural facilities including the National Museum of Modern Art and Kyoto municipal Museum of Art; and the Lake Biwa Canal Museum of Kyoto running along the southern edge, Kyoto Municipal Zoo is a city-style zoological park surrounded by nature.
Upon opening, a mere 238 animals of 61 species were housed here, while today this is home to more than 800 animals from over 200 species. In addition to serving as places for recreation and for studies of natural science, zoos assume an integral role as centers for the preservation and propagation of rare and endangered wildlife species. Kyoto Municipal Zoo, by striving continually to provide better care and facilities, is working no less to fulfill this vital trust.
